‘More green jobs in 2009’

There will be an increasing number of green jobs available to job seekers in 2009

There will be an increasing number of green jobs available to job seekers in 2009, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

Gerwyn Davies, public policy adviser from the CIPD, said that at the moment there are 500,000 positions available to skilled and unskilled job seekers but there is more competition for work due to the current economic climate.

"Our surveys have pointed to continuing recruitment difficulties. It''s about matching the skills needed for those jobs [with the right person]," he said.

Mr Davies went on to say that the future is bright for the job market as a million jobs will be created and many will come through government funding of environmental projects, which will generate green engineering jobs.

"We have been saying to look to the future as well as the [present] if you can -the big growth we will see is in green jobs with lots of government funding coming in," he added.

Research in the autumn by the CIPD revealed that 75 per cent of organisations are planning to recruit in the next three months.
